Freeze-dried Skittles: 4 flavours and how they differ from regular ones

Liofilizowane Skittles Original, popękane i chrupiące cukierki

Freeze-dried Skittles are the same sweets you know from the shop, just freeze-dried. They look different, because they're cracked and bigger, and they eat differently, because they crunch instead of chew. Below we compare the four flavours we stock and answer the questions we get most often.

What happens to a Skittle in the freeze dryer? 🧪

We freeze-dry our Skittles ourselves, in Poland. First the sweets are frozen, then the water evaporates under vacuum. At low pressure each sweet puffs up and cracks. The thin shell splits open and the chewy centre turns into a light, brittle foam.

The ingredients stay the same and only the texture changes. The sweet gets bigger and lighter and melts quickly in your mouth. The flavour seems stronger because there's no chewy texture covering it. We cover the process itself in our guide what freeze-dried sweets are.

Original 🔴

The classic from the red pack. If you've never had freeze-dried sweets, start here, because it's the easiest one to compare with regular Skittles.

Sour 🍋

First you taste the sour coating, then the sweet centre. The sourness is clear but quickly turns fruity. You'll find more sour sweets in our sour freeze-dried sweets collection.

Wild Berry 🫐

Pink, red and purple pieces with forest-berry flavours. For anyone who prefers berries to citrus.

Tropical 🌴

The most holiday-like version, more exotic than Original.

Ingredients and calories 📋

All four flavours have similar ingredients: sugar, glucose syrup, palm fat, acids, dextrin, maltodextrin, flavourings, modified starch and colours. None of them contains gelatine. We list the full ingredients for each flavour on its product page.

Freeze-drying removes water, but the sugar stays. Freeze-dried Skittles are no better for you than regular ones; they're still sweets.

How to eat freeze-dried Skittles 🥄

The easiest way is straight from the bag. You can also crush them and sprinkle them over ice cream, yoghurt or cupcake icing. We've collected a few ideas like this in our post recipes with freeze-dried sweets. Just remember they soften quickly when they touch moisture, so add them right before serving.

Once open, keep the bag tightly closed somewhere dry and eat the sweets within a few days. Don't put them in the fridge. There's more in our guide on how to store freeze-dried sweets.

Frequently asked questions ❓

Are freeze-dried Skittles hard?

No. They're brittle and easy to bite, and they melt quickly in your mouth.

Can you make freeze-dried Skittles at home?

You need a freeze dryer, a machine that freezes and dries under vacuum. In an ordinary freezer or oven, Skittles won't puff up the same way.

Why does the bag look full but weigh only 90 g?

After freeze-drying the sweets are bigger and lighter than before, so 90 g takes up more space than the same weight of regular Skittles.

Where did the freeze-dried Skittles trend come from?

From TikTok videos where you can hear the crunch and see the sweets crack. We write about it in our post on sweets from TikTok.
